Gavin Seim describes himself as an American Pictorialist who’s “passionate about making wall art, writing stories and sharing what [he] learns.” For three to five months out of every year, Gavin takes off in a camper with his family to “attempt to make images and film that do justice to the beauty of America.”

He admits to being fanatical about quality and, shooting with both digital, medium and large format film, a tripod is a must.

He writes:

“I carry an AT213 with a PHQ1 head almost everywhere – Nearly all my serious wall images are made using a tripod. I’ve found stability to be one of the Six Keys of Image Quality and it’s ignored at the cost of fine details.

Induro offered me a solid value with great leg locks and good support even for my larger film cameras, all while maintaining portability. My Induro is the best tripod I’ve owned since starting in photography at age twelve.”

Thankfully for us, Gavin is documenting his 2013 trip on his blog, A Road Trip Journal. There he’ll let you in on all the ups and downs, highs and lows, of camping with your family, being constantly on the move, and photographing every day in new locations.

He calls what he’s doing “super camping”, as his custom-built rig is completely independent and does not need to be hooked up in a campground. His truck even has a photographer’s platform on the roof! If you’d like to try out super camping for yourself, Gavin has written a helpful article on the process.

He’s shooting film, so to see the final work, we’ll have to be patient! In the meantime, take a look at some of his images from past trips.

Batan Rouge-based photographer Mark Bienvenu photographs what he knows. His Web site is brimming with landscape photographs from his hometown and surrounding areas. He sent us his story, and a couple of photos of his tripod in action, about a shoot in nearby Alabama. What follows are his thoughts on photography and tripods in his own words.

I capture images of the surrounding landscapes and city scenes in every place I travel. My favorite technique for taking images is to use long exposures during the times just before sunrise or just after sunset. You can’t take these types of shots without a quality tripod.

Ali Elhajj Shoots What He Wishes

Growing up during the Lebanese Civil War, Ali Elhajj lived an eventful life before coming to the United States. Since arriving here, he’s lived in states as far flung as Michigan, Hawaii, and Florida, where he’s remained since 2000. Fluent in both English and Arabic, Elhajj has done everything from photography to running a nonprofit organization to grad student marine mammal research to software programming. These diverse endeavors have helped shape who he is, what he photographs, and how he shoots his images.

While living in Hawaii as a college student, his mother gave him a Canon Digital Rebel. “I could see I had an eye, but I could tell I was far away from being a good photographer,” he recalls. This was the beginning of his career as a photographer. Being a writer of software, he’s very technical, but photography gives him “the opportunity to be both technical and artistic at the same time,” he feels.

Robin Black’s Sublime Weekends

Raised all around the United States due to her father’s Air Force career, Robin Black is no stranger to different landscapes. Living in California for the past twelve years, she’s settled down a bit, and does the majority of her outdoor photography in the Sierra Nevadas, throughout the Southwest and on the California coast. An award-winning photographer, you won’t soon find her shooting on the runways of New York or Paris. She is deeply passionate about the nature and how our sun illuminates it.

Tuolumne Meadows Sunset

Strategically located in Los Angeles, Black can reach the inspiring locations of her choice quickly. “L.A. makes a great base for landscape photography because it’s pretty easy to get up to either the west or eastern side of the Sierras from L.A.,” she explains. “The desert is close by, the coast is close by, so I can drive about three hours in any direction and be someplace great for photography.”
